Phrases like “war on women” and “#metoo” have been repeated by the left in recent years, with many liberals claiming the moral high ground on women’s rights and feminism.

More and more, however, it looks like the mistreatment of women is as much a liberal problem as anyone else’s. Close Democrat allies like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and now James Gunn have faced major scandals … and it looks like they’re not out of the woods yet.

Now, one of the Democratic Party’s top officials is facing serious allegations of abuse from his ex-girlfriend and her family.

Rep. Keith Ellison, who is the co-chair of the Democratic National Committee and also the first Muslim to be elected to U.S. Congress, has been accused of emotional and physical abuse by Karen Monahan and her son.

In a series of he-said, she-said allegations that seem ripped from the tabloids, the Monahans called the situation with the congressman “pure hell” while Rep. Ellison denied the charges.

“The allegations surfaced Saturday night from Karen Monahan after her son alleged in a Facebook post that he had seen text messages from Ellison threatening her and video of the congressman screaming obscenities at her as he dragged her off a bed by her feet,” reported Fox News, citing The Associated Press.

Monahan’s adult son, 25-year-old Austin Monahan, led the charge against the Democrat. “My brother and I watched our mom come out of pure hell after getting out of her relationship with Keith Ellison,” he posted.

Karen, who had been in a relationship with the DNC co-chair, used Twitter to confirm her son’s statement on Sunday.

“Every statement he made was true. @keithellison, you know you did that to me,” she tweeted. Monahan also alleged that the congressman was slandering her son as a liar for bringing the accusations to light.

For his part, Congressman Ellison has confirmed that he was in a serious relationship with the woman but has flatly denied the accusations being leveled against him.

“Karen and I were in a long-term relationship which ended in 2016, and I still care deeply for her well-being,” Ellison said. “This video does not exist because I never behaved in this way, and any characterization otherwise is false.”

It must also be pointed out that the video allegedly documenting the congressman’s physical abuse of his girlfriend has so far not surfaced.

“Karen Monahan did not respond to a request from The Associated Press asking for copies of the video or text messages,” reported the AP.

Ellison is facing a primary election in just a matter of days. In June, he announced that he was planning on leaving Congress and instead would run for Minnesota attorney general. That race is currently underway.

Unsurprisingly, his opponents used the domestic controversy to their advantage and called on police to investigate the accusations.

“If there are records and video of his interaction with the victim, those materials also should be turned over to law enforcement for immediate investigation,” said attorney Tom Foley, one of the candidates in the race.

“Domestic Violence is never ok. The incidents described are troubling. I call on Keith Ellison to answer these allegations,” echoed Deborah Hilstrom, a state representative who is now running for attorney general against Ellison.

There are many questions that remain in this case, and the timing of the yet-unproven allegations is certainly dubious. With that said, it’s time for the left to face the music: Abuse is not a partisan issue, and Democrats should hold their officials to the same standards they demand everyone else.
